Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Antietam
On September 17, 1862, 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat during the Battle of Antietam. It was this battle that ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia's first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln's issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
This year Antietam National Battlefield will commemorate the Sesquicentennial (150th) of this important Civil War battle.
Join the Chamber and the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau as we welcome Dr. Susan Trail, the new Superintendent of Antietam National Battlefield, for an overview of Sesquicentennial events and the tourism related economic impact they have on Washington County. price information
