The Jefferson County Historical Society, the Historic Shepherdstown Commission, and the Shepherdstown Men’s Club have invited Dr. Warren Hofstra, Professor of History at Shenandoah University, to present “On the Edge of Empire, The Making of Mecklenburg, Virginia,” describing the origins of present day Shepherdstown. This event kicks off a series of historic lectures hosted by the Historic Shepherdstown Commission to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Shepherdstown.
Dr. Hofstra has written extensively on the topic of early backcountry Virginia, including The Planting of New Virginia: Settlement and Landscape in the Shenandoah Valley. He also edited The Great Valley Road of Virginia: Shenandoah Landscapes from Prehistory to the Present (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 2010).
